The New Haven PE department received about 1.5 million dollars over three years, to help aid in reducing childhood obesity by increasing movement time. Below is Marvin’s new concept and a interview on his mission to keeping kids in Connecticut healthy & active while attending school.

Our Concept:

I came up the concept for the grant when I first saw this type of equipment at a National convention. Being a gamer myself, I thought this would be a great way to motivate the students who are inactive to exercise. Two of the biggest markets are Wellness and Videogames. The problem today is that with video games, students are becoming less active. In order to combat the increase in childhood obesity I thought Exergaming. Exergaming combines video games with exercise. This won’t solve the problem but it will bridge the gap. The Wii first took off with this type of technology, and now more and more companies are jumping on board.

Program Overview

The program, I created to reduce childhood obesity, is called T.H.A.N.C.S. THANCS stands for Teaching Health and Nutrition Choices to Students. This program was made possible because a very generous PEP grant. The New Haven PE department received about 1.5 million dollars over three years, to help aid in reducing childhood obesity by increasing movement time. Currently we have about 15 elementary – middle schools, up and running with more to come.

The program uses innovative technology to better assess our students and to motivate them to exercise. Some of the assessment technologies that are being utilized are: Heart rate monitors, TriFit machine, Pedometers and handheld palm pilots. Exergaming equipment was also purchased thru the grant. Some of the Exergaming equipment purchased included Dance, Dance Revolution, Lightspace Play Floor, Gamebikes, Nintendo Wii’s, and Xavix’s.

—————————————————

Marvin Christley has been teaching Physical Education for New Haven Public Schools for the last 19 years. During his tenure in New Haven, he has served in various capacities including; Physical Education Grants Facilitator, Beginning Teacher Mentor, Middle School Athletics Supervisor and one of the New Haven High Schools Athletics’ Event Staff Coordinator. Marvin also sits on numerous committees including: New Haven’s City Wellness Committee, Connecticut State Wellness Promotion Committee, and the Connecticut Physical Fitness Test Committee. In addition to his professional committee efforts, he has received a writing credit for his work with Dr. David Katz MD on his “ABC for Fitness”™ (Activity Bursts in the Classroom) program.

Marvin is an alumnus of both Eastern Connecticut State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree, and Southern Connecticut State University where he earned his Masters of Science in Exercise Science.

Marvin introduced New Haven Public Schools to Exergaming in 2008 after winning the Carol M. White PEP Grant. With this grant he was able to provide 22 public elementary and middle schools in New Haven with numerous exergaming resources and equipment.

Marvin immediately identified Exergaming as a valuable tool in the fight against childhood obesity. He understood how it would bridge the gap between physical activity and video gaming, an activity once attributed to a sedentary lifestyle.

Since first piloting Exergaming in New Haven Public Schools, Marvin has shared his experiences and modes of data collection to track student performance at both the AAHPERD National Convention, in Indianapolis, Indiana and at CTAHPERD’s Annual Conferences 2009 and 2010.

Marvin maintains his progressive outlook on physical activity by looking for innovative ways to bring Physical Education into the 21st century. He is dedicated to promoting an active lifestyle and diligent in his efforts to modernize Physical Education programs.

Lightspace Play Floor:
Lightspace plays fun games that get kids moving. In both single-player and multi-player mode, the games require players to be active. Players choose their game and difficulty level, and Lightspace takes it from there. It senses and responds to their every move and makes the games unpredictable and exciting. Kids work up a sweat, have fun and come back for more. Kids can get their recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise without even realizing they’re “working out.”

Operating the Lightspace System:
The Lightspace Tiles are made out of a polycarbonate shell that will withstand 3000lb of pressure per tile all protected by a vinyl membrane. The wall mount console is constructed of steel and powder coated for protection.

The Lightspace Move Software gives you full control over your content. You decide which games are active, where each game is located, even the game’s length. With this password protected Administration Area, operators can control almost every aspect of their system. The Administration Area also holds a full Diagnostic Suite and displays key reports showing you how much your content is being played.

Maintenance is just as easy. At the end of the day, just clean the surface with a damp cloth or mop and bucket. If your vinyl covering becomes dirty or damaged, all that is needed to replace is the vinyl. The Lightspace Move System also ships with a spare tile. If for some reason you are having issues with a tile, simply disconnect it, pull it right up and drop in the spare. Everything is back up and running in less than five minutes.

Lightspace will develop the same skills that regular fitness programs develop: endurance, coordination, agility, and flexibility, as well as strategic thinking and memory. Kids would need to participate in several sports to get the same benefits. Lightspace has 7 games for the play floor, Dodgeball, Bug Invasion, Musical Squares, Tennis Pro, Memory Buster, Zero Gravity, and Knock Down. As kids move from one game to the other, they improve different skills without breaking their rhythm or losing their enthusiasm.

Lightspace Promotes Healthy Social Interaction
Most video games provide a personal experience. Even 2-player games usually require the kids to focus on the screen in front of them. Lightspace’s unique surface allows players to interact with one another. The nature of the gaming experience fosters communication and healthy interaction between players

Lightspace Combines Physical Activity and Electronic Entertainment
With the increasing rate of obesity among children, physically interactive video games are an effective and increasing popular form of exercise. The combination of physical movement and the competitive nature of video games has many previously sedentary children spending several hours a week engaging in aerobic activity and enjoying it. Lightspace is an excellent source of entertainment, and a fun way to keep fit.

Located in the Warner Brothers Studio back lot, over 600 guests attended Ellen’s 50th birthday party on Saturday May 10th. The guest list included well known artists and actors including Tom Hanks, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani and David Spade.

The Lightspace Interactive flooring was built out as a 28′x22′ dance floor and was provided by Lightspace partner, Just Light That, out of Las Vegas, NV . The floor acted as both a dance floor and a stage to host Ryan Seacrest, Pink and a multitude of dance performances.

“Finally, we got to see Ellen dance on Lightspace. I am very happy that the system is now getting this level of attention. The market is really understanding and pulling for our interactive technology”, said Gary Florindo, President and CEO of Lightspace Corporation.

As more and more parents work out, it seems more and more gyms have figured out what to do with the kids. Some have daycares while others have combined exorcise and video games. It’s called Exergaming.

At LiI’ One 2 One on Kirby you can see kids pounding lights and likely watching their pounds. The gym recently installed a LIghtspace Play Wall. It’s one of only a few in the Houston area. Kids can play six games with names like Smashball and Turbotag. You just wear these things that look like boxing gloves and you are ready to interact with a touch sensitive experience that works on reflexes and stamina.

The Briar Club in Houston has a similar set-up. With “Gym Ready” games Dance Revolution and a series of poles you touch when you see lights and hear sounds.

It’s kind of like that game “Simon Says”!

The hope is that games like this can help kids, who are used to video games, get in better shape while at play.

Physical literacy is an idea that is gaining a lot of currency with physical education teachers and childhood development experts. The term describes the balance and movement skills that every child needs to master in life to be successful and confident in sports, games and recreational activities.

These skills have traditionally been taught through conventional physical education drills and games—but one school in Calgary has been using a less traditional teaching method, video games.

The Foundations for the Future Academy in Calgary is the home of the University of Calgary’s Canadian Exergaming Research Centre. Faculty of Kinesiology Researcher Dr. Larry Katz, who heads the Centre, says that the new generation of video games could be an important tool in teaching children physical literacy and balance

“Our studies to this point suggest that children who play these interactive games, improve their postural stability, or balance, to the same level as children who are taught these skills in a more traditional, physical education environment,” says Katz. “The point is that these children really enjoy playing the games and are likely to play them outside of a gym class setting, which I think makes them a very important potential tool in helping children who don’t enjoy traditional sports and games to learn physical literacy skills and balance.”

Katz, along with PhD student Dwayne Sheehan, began their research at the school last spring and have undertaken a number of studies to determine the impact and benefit of exergaming activity. Sheehan says the data has been remarkable.

“We have found that children who participate in some of the games that require graduated balance control, can improve their scores on balance between 25 percent (grade three students) and 29 percent (grade four students,) over a six week period,” says Sheehan. “So to this point the results have been very good.”

Katz and Sheehan are quick to point out that the video games are not a substitute for sports or gym class, but are definitely a proven way to learn balance and physical literacy skills while becoming a little more active. Katz adds that learning these skills may also help in the fight against childhood obesity. “Many of these children just don’t feel comfortable competing in sports and games, and part of the reason for this may be because they lack the fundamental movement skills necessary to enjoy sports.”

“Perhaps learning these skills in a virtual environment that they feel comfortable in is an important first step to becoming more active and feeling better about their ability to compete and take part in sports and games.”
